Often your rationalization is correct at some level. Usually when you're holding an umbrella it's because it is raining, and you took the umbrella because it started to rain, even tough that was actually an unconscious decision.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14070478672991764040noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33042626.post-6909598406118278342007-08-06T06:35:00.000-07:002007-08-06T06:35:00.000-07:00I have a problem with a lot of these sorts of argu...I have a problem with a lot of these sorts of arguments. Let's take, for example, the "effect of attractiveness" study you mentioned. You're making the assumption that there is something wrong with making decisions about people based on their attractiveness. The human mind is the product of millions of years of evolution. If using this "attractiveness factor" to make decisions was not advantageous, i.e., adaptive, then it would not be so ingrained in the modern human mind. The real problem is that you don't yet understand _why_ it's a good idea to make decisions this way. Just because you don't understand the basis for a certain behavior doesn't mean it's irrational.Matt Blodgetthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06115180196173160813noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33042626.post-79978802037423602322007-08-04T18:21:00.000-07:002007-08-04T18:21:00.000-07:00rationalizations and excusesYou might find these i...rationalizations and excuses
You might find these interesting:

A Mind Of Its Own: How Your Brain Distorts and Deceives, 2006

Six Impossible Things Before BreakfastIsaac Gouyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02902123247585964087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33042626.post-23583153147167552172007-08-04T10:54:00.000-07:002007-08-04T10:54:00.000-07:00Another tip is to realize "we have never been mode...Another tip is to realize "we have never been modern." Bruno Latour has a book with that title, I used to have it but it disappeared.

Modernity is mostly an illusion. If you quiz folks about science, for example, most of us (two-thirds) don't even have basic science literacy, and all of us typically resort to middle age (medieval) theories of the world (a moving object has to be pushed).

Look at road rage. Look at Jerry Springer. Look at who we vote into office.

Another lesson is that we ignore most of what goes on in the world, even that happening right in front of our eyes. See research on change blindness, for example. Look at how we ignore Darfur and other genocides.

The same lessons apply not just to designing products, but in designing instruction, too. Just because a teacher carefully explains some concept for example, doesn't mean the students hear it and understand it. And those that do hear it likely understand it differently from the teacher.Doug Holtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02740763550543657462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33042626.post-82089409115846942982007-08-04T02:22:00.000-07:002007-08-04T02:22:00.000-07:00I believe House (tv-series) says it a lot as well....I believe House (tv-series) says it a lot as well. One example is a deadline.

In part, "Getting Things Done" is about manipulating the environment in order to manipulate the emotions you couldn't otherwise control.

Smart folks know they are irrational and watch themselves be irrational and use that irrationality to their advantage.

By the way, if you like "Influence", I highly recommend "Bargaining for Advantage".
